Camping Trip Snapshots

Our 7 & 8 backpack trip up Redwood Creek was an autumnal ode to joy.  Here are a few student snapshots:

We were walking through many different environments;
redwoods, river areas, and more. we were walking through moist dirt
with the smell of wildflowers and hearing things like small birds
chirping and the sound of the river next to us.

T
he water tasted of clean metal as AnaMae and I plunged into the freezing cold swimming hole by our new campsite. I
blew
a stream of small bubbles out of my mouth and headed downward. When I
opened my eyes, the water stung bad and then calmed down. I drifted
along the edge of the jumping rock gliding my hand over the smooth
algae and pointed snails that had attached themselves to the side of
the boulder. I dipped my head down and dived to grab a handful of
gravel. The stones felt cool in my hand. I spread out my fingers and
let the pebbles slip through my fingers so that they glided towards the
bottom like a feather glides through air
.

There was a small swimming hole covered by overhanging
branches and the gravel bar kept going as far as you could see.  I
waded out to a partially submerged log and ate my sandwich.  By the
time I got to the log my feet were numb, that's how cold it was. After
I was finished a couple of my friends had jumped in. I thought " No
way, I'm not going swimming."  But the water looked so refreshing and
so inviting.  So I waded through the shin deep freezing water.  My mind
was split between jumping in and staying out.  But finally, the look of
such refreshment blew me over.  I took off my shirt and jumped
in.  The freezing water rushed over my head. I burst through the
surface spluttering and gasping for air, but it felt so refreshing.
This, I thought, was true heaven.  This refreshment was enough for us
to drudge the last mile where ice water and popsicles awaited us.

That night, Nick and I, helped make a campfire.  It was a really good one.
We all sat around it and ate hot-dogs and for buns we used slugs, the
bagels not real slugs.  John ate about 8 hot-dogs, it was gross.  Then
after we had our hot-dogs, we went to marshmallows. Lily has  the
marshmallow gift, she can make a perfect marshmallow.

One of the most memorable moments for me was waking up outside and
seeing this wispy, purple and pink cloud above my head. I wasn't quite
awake all the way so I was thinking, "Why is everything sideways and OH
MY GOD! that tree is going to fall! And so is that one! All of them
are!" I'm not a morning person.

        Nick Verhey, 8th grade

It was
early morning and the sun was beaming down on the stream in such a way
that it looked almost of gold. The air was cold, the chilling kind of
cold, and cold enough to see our own breath.
Not thinking of
the long hike home ahead,
our bellies were full of
oatmeal and marshmallows which seemed to keep us warm.

Reach the summit...Peak

This 2007 novel, Peak, by Roland Smith, is a realistic
fiction book. This books theme is mainly have faith in your friends and
to look deeper in what you want to do with your life.

This story is about a 14 year old kid named Peak who gets busted
for illegally climbing a sky scraper in New York City. Because of this
he is sent off to Tibet where his long-lost dad asks him to accompany
him in climbing the tallest mountain in the whole world, Mt. Everest.
If he reaches the top before he turns 15 he will have been the youngest
ever reach the peak of Everest. Now throw in an unexpected friendship
with another 14 year old, Sun-jo, who also wants to make a summit
attempt and how he helps Peak realize what his true passion is and what
he really wants out of life...  Through a stream of a thrilling events
Peak shares his story of his climb to the summit that changed his life.

I think this book was very memorable because it really shows you that
it is possible to not be selfish and that caring for other people can
actually do a lot of good to yourself. I think that being selfless is
really important in a community because that way you can feel empathy
for one another. Felling empathy for a person can strengthen your
relationship with that someone and if everybody could be selfless and
feel empathy then it would be easier to understand  your community
members. People could get along.
I really like how the book
ended. It kind of left you hanging but it also left you well informed.
At first I was a little disappointed at the ending but then I realized
that if the author had written it any way it wouldn't have been as good
as it was. I figured out after words that the whole story was leading up
to that one key point. I would say that the very end of the story was
the most important part and it the part that readers should remember.
Overall I think this has to be one of the best books I have read in a really long time (if not the
best)! It was greatly written and provides a statement that should most
definitely be heard by all teen readers who are in for a thrilling
adventure to the top of the world.

Absolute Boyfriend

!Absolute Boyfriend Review!

Absolute Boyfriend was writen by Yuu Watase. It was publish on Feburary 25, 2005.   The Book is a romance comedy, Science Fiction. The plot of the story is

Riiko Izawa has never had a boyfriend and she has been rejected by every boy she has ever had a crush on. When she returns a lost cell phone to an oddly dressed salesman, she mentions wanting a boyfriend so to thank her, he directs her to his company's website, Kronos Heaven. When she visits the site, Riiko finds it's a site to create your own lover. Thinking its a game, she customizes and accidentally orders one. The next day, her new lover arrives. Following the instruction manual, she kisses him to wake him up and configure him to be in love with only her. She names him "Night." Three days later, she is shocked to learn that she only had him for a free trial for 72 hours. The salesman, Gaku Namikiri, tells her that she must now pay 100,000,000 yen (money) for Night, however, they will waive the fee if she helps them to collect data about how women think and feel to help perfect future models.

The main characters in this story is Riiko Izawa, Night Tenjo, Soshi Asamoto, and Gaku Namikiri. I dont have anything to not like about it, it is a great romance comedy manga book, and for I think people who love Japanese and manga! read this book! You'll see how great it is, trust me, its totally good and funny! I think making your own boyfriend would be fun but sometimes not so fun because if you just make random options for your boyfriend, then it would lead to trouble, so sometimes it can be fun if you make right options for your boyfriend. it brings imagenation and laugh out loud! also it brings romance. so if you read this book, i hope you will enjoy it!

The Raw Shark Texts

The Raw Shark Texts
I have been reading the book The Raw Shark texts by Steven Hall. I would Put the book The Raw Shark Texts in the science fiction category, because of the the fiction in the mathematics an physics. The books theme is that you cant make people live for ever. The theme is based upon the fact that his girlfriend has gone missing or died he dose not know because a virtual shark is eating his memory because he tried to save his girlfriend from death from the shark.
The raw shark texts is about a man named Eric. Eric wakes up in his home and remembers nothing of his past or of who he is. Finding notes and letters he had wrote himself in the past for the future he started his quest to find out what is causing the and get his memory back from the virtual Shark that is eating his memory according to the notes he found from himself.
I think this book is mind blowing and action packed. It will get your hart pounding as soon as you see the cover. The authors opinions and facts are so mind blowing that there is only a few things to talk about. The author expressed the fact that there is such things in data and you're mind its self as sharks and predators feeding on your mind. I think that it is possible but not that likely to happen.
The Book The Raw Shark Texts I found it as a good read so good I am reading it for a second time and am still hooked on it i recommend this book for boys that like adventure, mathematics, and physical theories that will blow your mind.
